    COLD SPRAYING

Cold spraying is a new process to coat surfaces. It is based on the impact of cold particles with high kinetic energy on substrates / carrier materials (see Illustration of the company Linde).

To this end a process gas heated up to 800 °C is accelerated by expansion in a laval nozzle to supersonic speed and then the powder particles are injected into the gas beam. Due to the expansion of the process gas these injected spraying particle are accelerated to such a high speed that contrary to other thermal spraying processes even without prior melting a dense and firmly, bonding, low oxide or largely oxide-free layer is created upon the impact onto the substrate. As the temperature of the process gas is below the melting point of the spraying material its microstructure is not changed so that the layer does not differ from the raw material. Even the component part only warms insignifi-cantly.

A clearly defined spraying beam geometry allow for the application of layers largely without the necessity of masking.

A feature typical of the cold spraying technology is the spraying jet, which is focussed to a diameter of a few millimetres and the even smaller particle diameters between 5 to 38 µm.

    Some important parameters:

    • Layer thickness:

    5 µm to several mm

    • Temperature of the gas jet:

    800° C

    • Speed of the gas jet:

    multiple supersonic speed

    • Particle size:

    5 to 38 µm

    • Particle speed:

    500 m/sec to 1500 m/sec

    • Spraying materials:

    metals and alloys
